Recorded with @byepumkinpodcast today, and had an absolute blast. We talked for two hours about season two of Vanderpump Rules, and laughed a lot. The episode will come out on her feed on Sunday. I am so excited! I hope you enjoy.
(Been fighting my autocorrect hard for this one. The title “Bye Pumkin” comes from an auspicious moment in reality tv history. On the first dating show setup (remember all of those?), Flavor of Love, the hype man and rapper from the group Public Enemy invited a bunch of women to a mansion to make them fight for his companionship. He then gave them all nicknames. It was down to three women, and he eliminated the last white woman, Pumkin (for good reason, not because she was white, as you shall see). The elegant Hoops stood there quietly, but New York, who has since become an icon in reality tv (she walked so the Real Housewives could run), yelled “Bye, Pumkin!” after her. Now, they had been fighting the entire time, which is part of the setup of this kind of show. Fight for your man and all that. But they also rubbed each other the wrong way. When New York did that, Pumkin did the worst thing possible she could have done. Ever. She turned around and spit at New York. And New York, I’m betting, blacked out with anger. The show knew they had gold, and showed the spit in slow motion. Yes, they did. It lives in infamy on YouTube and probably TikTok remixes if you want to go find it. I’m not going to link to the golden reality tv loogie in my newsletter. Standards. I can’t be linking to Sylvia Plath one moment and then a slow motion spitwad the next. I know I say everything is connected, but still. :D
So, that’s where Princess’ podcast name comes from. She reexamines old reality tv show through a new lens. How did the producers manipulate us, and it is obvious now? What were the ethics of that show? (We had a good time with this one with season two of Vanderpump Rules.) How have societal mores changes since the time of the show, and would certain things fly now that they did and said on it? It’s a lot of fun, and much more intellectual than you would think on the surface. I highly suggest you subscribe and enjoy. Princess also talks about her family (she has fostered to adoption five children, and is really humble about it) and everyday life stuff, and is really generous with her episodes, they regularly go over two hours. She’s hilarious and sweet. She has already said I am coming back on, probably to finish this Vanderpum Rules season, and we have plans to breakdown that sad and unadvisable show The Two Coreys, about Corey Haim and Corey Feldman’s relationship. I cannot wait.
