Judy Blume owns a bookstore called Books & Books. I want to beef up my Judy Blume collection that has survived from childhood and adolescence. So what better way to celebrate the day, than to buy Judy Blume directly from her on Independent Bookstore Day!
So I ordered the second in the Fudge series, one I loved, Otherwise Known As Sheila the Great; Freckle Juice, a book I probably haven't read in 40 years; and a book I haven't read yet, Just As Long As We're Together, about best friends and best friend drama. (All links are to Books & Books.)
I even added a love note to Judy Blume that basically mirrors my first paragraph, and letting her know as well that Mom and I went to the early premiere of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. and loved it.
99% and 96% on Rotten Tomatoes
my 5 star Letterboxd review (very minor spoilers):
Attended the early premiere at Alamo. Yes, I went with my mom. The audience applauded at the end. It’s that special.
❤️ My childhood, perfectly realized, both in translating the novel and in depicting the 70’s.
Look for Judy Blume’s cameo as a neighbor. I think that was her husband with her. I love her so much.
The best scene that brought back so many memories as a young woman: when Margaret tries on a pad for practice. She pulls up her underwear and tights, then immediately starts doing the universal awkward dance, that I did, of How Does This Thick Thing Settle Into Place…then checks her butt in the mirror while still moving like she is wearing a diaper, knowing something an inch thick and feeling like that must be visible. I was laughing and having flashbacks.
I was Laura Danker. I developed in fourth grade. I had an hourglass figure in sixth grade. So the “popular” girls hated me and tried everything they could to convince me I was ugly. Photos don’t lie; I wish I had known how cute I was.
I think I need to reread all of Judy Blume for the podcast. Incoming.
Oh! When Margaret writes her report on religion, and tells her teacher she isn’t sure there is a God, one guy walked out. Welcome to Liberty University Land.
